The problems have NOT been sorted out. Hydrogen IS dangerous. Helium IS hard to obtain. Airships cannot fly above the weather — and contrary to what the story says, that is a BIG problem.

Airships are also very long and when they encounter a downdraft, the front of the craft encounters it long (many seconds) before it affects the rear. This causes the airship to enter a dive from which the it seems to have some difficulty recovering. And then, when it eventually does recover from the dive, the pilot has inevitably over-corrected and the craft rears upwards. Sightseeing blimps used to operate round my area in the summer, and I used to wonder how the passengers were not sea-sick from the way they used to pitch around the sky.
